Teeth Whitening Yarmouth, ME

Having a beautiful smile may be even easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they’ve been dreaming of with our simple “whitening” procedure.

What are the details of teeth whitening?

It’s safe, quick, and inexpensive. Just let us know at any appointment if you would like to whiten your teeth.

Ask about our whitening system.  It is easy to use and effective for a number of different extrinsic stains (stains from the external surface of the tooth caused by foods, beverage, tobacco use).

Dental whitening is not as effective if staining is intrinsic (coming from inside the tooth – such as from a tooth that is non-vital/root canal treated, or calcified nerve tissue). These types of stain may be indicated for other treatment if they are of aesthetic concern.  After a thorough exam, including radiographs, Dr Russo will be able to guide you to the most effective treatment for you.

How is teeth whitening done?

Key Benefits of Teeth Whitening

  • Corrects brown, yellow and spotted tooth staining
  • Works on people of any age
  • does not irreversibly alter teeth

The most effective whitening systems are ones that are done routinely.  Dr Russo will supply the professional whitener (as well as instructions) that should be used for about 30 minutes daily for one week.  This process is repeated every 3-6 months depending on your treatment goals and dietary habits (for patient’s who consume coffee or tea regularly, etc a 3 month time frame is beneficial.  For those who drink clear liquids, etc a 6 month period would be sufficient to maintain a bright smile).

Considerations for Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening will not alter the shade of existing restorations (veneers, crowns, etc).  When whitening teeth this should be taken into account as new restorations in the aesthetic zone may be required to match the new shade of teeth.  Dr Russo will discuss this with you at your consultation appointment if whitening is something that is of interest to you.

There are many over the counter products that are available for purchase to the public which are also somewhat effective at whitening (which Dr Russo may also recommend these for you in lieu of professional whitening).  It is important that the condition of the teeth and gums are optimal for your mouth prior to starting a whitening procedure.  If the teeth and gum are not in a healthy state, whitening may cause tooth sensitivity and/or gum irritation.  It is prudent to visit the dentist prior to starting a whitening system.
