Immediate Dentures Yarmouth, ME

An immediate denture is a solution when complete extractions of your remaining teeth is unavoidable. An immediate denture will transition you from extraction of teeth to your final restoration while allowing you to maintain aesthetics. The preparation for this procedure begins before all remaining teeth are extracted.
After deciding on this treatment modality the first step is extraction of the remaining back teeth by the Oral Surgeon (leaving only the incisors and canines in place). Once the back teeth are extracted, a healing period of about 6-8 weeks is normal prior to obtaining impressions – this allows the back of the immediate denture to be fabricated on a stable base. Next is a couple of visits for measurements and a try in for the back teeth of the denture. Once these visits are completed the immediate denture is fabricated. With the immediate denture completed the patient goes back to the Oral Surgeon for extraction of the remaining front teeth and reshaping of the jaw bone in that area. After the extractions the patient proceeds back to Dr Russo to have the immediate denture inserted. There are multiple follow up appointments after insertion of the immediate denture including a 24 hour post op visit.
What you should know about immediate dentures
These are interim/temporary dentures that are worn after the extraction of the front teeth as well as the healing period following. Once healing is complete the final restorative plan should begin – whether that final plan is fabrication of a final complete denture or implant retained restorations (fixed or removable).
Considerations for dentures
Not everyone is a good candidate for dentures. There are multiple obstacles to overcome when becoming accustomed to complete dentures, such as retention, speech and finally function. Each patient is an individual and will require a different amount of time to become accustomed to the new porsthetics. Once a person is accustomed to their dentures a patient can expect to exert 20% of the biting force they would normally be able to achieve compared to a full compliment of their natural teeth. Patient’s who may have difficulty becoming accustomed to dentures include patients with a gag reflex and patients with dry mouth. Dr Russo will discuss your specific risk factors and how they may impact success of therapy.
